Discover Germany
Get a ferry to Germany from the UK, Denmark
and Sweden. As a holiday destination, there
may be a lot more than you imagined. Modern
Germany has come of age, and while it is
still suffering the economic consequences of
reunification in October 1990, it is clearly
a progressive nation. This was shown to the
world in the 2006 World Cup, where German
hospitality and nation pride came out with
top marks.
The German ferry port of Cuxhaven in the
north allows you to reach Hamburg in a
reasonable time. Here you can experience the
famous Reeperbahn and St Pauli quarter,
enjoy a harbour cruise in the canals or
relax in one of the city's many parks.
Travelling in Germany
Intercity and high-speed ICE connections run
frequently to around 30 destinations (mainly
in Germany but trains also run to Austria,
Belgium, The Netherlands and Switzerland).
Within Germany, ICE trains also operate on
the following routes:
Berlin-Frankfurt/M-Karlsruhe,
Berlin-Cologne-Basel,
Munich-Frankfurt/M-Berlin and
Hamburg-Berlin-Dresden with direct links to
Prague.
Germany is covered by a modern network of
Autobahn which are toll free at present -
although plans are in place to introduce a
levy. Although motorways in eastern Germany
are of a reasonable standard, many secondary
roads are still being improved to match
western Germany's standards. There is no
maximum speed limit on Autobahns but it is
recommended that you stay under 70-80mph

Things to see
Germany has plenty of variety
including charming river cruises on
the Rhine, the traditional
Oktoberfest and Christmas markets to
the cultural hotbed of Berlin and
the thrill of skiing or snowboarding
in the Alps. Much further south you
will find Munich with its alpine
character and Mediterranean verve.
The cultured city has plenty of beer
gardens, operas and haute cuisine
restaurants.
Visit the Berlin Wall Museum
(Mauermuseum) at Checkpoint Charlie,
where people crossed from West to
East and vice versa during the Cold
War. |
